With most of the country preparing to embrace all things sloppy and starry-eyed for Valentine’s Day, one eccentric couple put a terrifying twist on the traditional celebrations today by being the first couple in the UK to get married on a rollercoaster at THORPE PARK in Staines, Surrey.

Horror film fanatics, Gaynor Cooper, 32, and Karl Anderson, 28, are the unique bride and groom who said ‘I do’ at the top of THORPE PARK’s brand new rollercoaster, SAW - The Ride which has not yet officially launched but which opened specially for the occasion. Based on the most popular horror film franchise in history, ‘Saw’, the new rollercoaster was deemed the perfect venue for their wedding by the avant-garde duo who harbour a love of horror flicks.

Gaynor and Karl contacted THORPE PARK as soon as they heard about the scary new ride to enquire whether they could get married aboard the coaster. Although the theme park is not open to the public until 14th March 2009, Karl and Gaynor’s unusual request caught the hearts and imagination of staff who agreed to open the ride especially for the couple, meaning they will be the first people to ride the new extreme G-force coaster, as well as the first couple in the UK to ever get married on a rollercoaster!

Gaynor Cooper comments on her horror-inspired wedding: “Getting married on the rollercoaster was incredible! We never in a million years thought our request to do this would be accepted so we are absolutely thrilled THORPE PARK let us have our wedding here!

We searched loads of weird and wonderful venues as we knew we didn’t want a boring white wedding and this was the one that really stood out. We both love the ‘Saw’ films and have seen each of them about a hundred times!”

Humanist celebrant Jim Trimmer, who performed the wedding ceremony, comments: “It’s certainly very different from any wedding I’ve performed before. But the whole point of a humanist marriage ceremony is to give couples the freedom to express their individual personalities and make personal choices about vows, music, readings and of course the venue.”

Karl and Gaynor tailored their ceremony to include some horror inspired vows entitled ‘The Newly-Deads’ and got married to the sound of Marilyn Manson’s version of ‘Tainted Love’.
