Britain’s most inspiring sporting moments revealed
Torvill and Dean’s perfect score at the 1984 Olympics has been voted the nation’s most inspirational sporting moment, 27 years after the pair’s incredible performance saw them win gold in Sarajevo.
That’s according to a poll released today which saw the celebrated duo beat the 1966 World Cup winning England team into second place. Third on the list was Dame Kelly Holmes winning two gold medals in Athens in 2004.
The middle distance running superstar just pipped the Great Britain coxless four of Redgrave, Pinsent, Foster and Cracknell winning gold in Sydney (Redgrave’s fifth consecutive Olympic gold) to the top three.
A quarter of those polled by Mars Refuel say they have been inspired to take up a sport following a major sporting event, or by watching sport on TV, or from the success of an elite sportsperson.
That was the case for Olympic silver medallist Matthew Langridge, who took up rowing despite no background in the sport, after watching Sir Steven Redgrave win gold in Atlanta in 1996 with Matthew Pinsent in the coxless pair.
In this video Matthew tells his story and explains why he’s hoping to inspire future Olympians with his own career. He’ll also give details of the launch of the Mars Refuel Drink Fund which will see £5,000 donated to sporting individuals, teams and clubs every month from April until the end of September 2011.
