A recent survey suggests that up to 10% of the UK population, as many as 4.6 million people, may suffer from frequent diarrhoea. Research of 1,000 diarrhoea sufferers, commissioned by the makers of Imodium, found that 1 in 3 people admit to having an ‘over-active’ bowel. Diarrhoea can have a significant impact on quality of life with 65% saying that bowel problems such as diarrhoea stop them from doing what they normally do. Many sufferers are unwilling to talk clearly and openly about their condition, meaning that they can feel alienated from family and friends.

Although diarrhoea is often associated with travel or food-poisoning, there are many factors which can cause an imbalanced digestive system, with food and mood being the main triggers. Recent research by Imodium reveals that many believe the main cause of diarrhoea to be stress or anxiety with 78% of people feeling stressed.

The research also discloses how eating habits are increasing digestive health problems, although 74% of people are aware that eating quickly affects their digestive health , 65% still admit to rushing while eating, showing many are ignoring advice about the subject.
