Movie hunk Zac Efron and his girlfriend Vanessa Hudgens have delivered a blow to Disney – they're refusing to work on a sequel to the monster film hit High School Musical.

The couple have chosen not to sign for the fourth instalment of the popular cheesy flick franchise.

However, it's not all bad news as they will be starring in the third version of the movie, High School Musical 3: Senior Year, set for release later this year.

Fans were led to believe the movie would be the final episode but now Disney has revealed plans are well underway for another film, with a script already being penned.

Disney suit Rich Ross told MTV: 'We are writing High School Musical 4.

'We have learned that just putting a number next to a title is a very old idea. We have to have a new story.'

All the stars of the original TV movie, including Zac Efron who plays Troy, Vanessa Hudgens starring as Gabriella and Ashley Tisdale in Sharpay’s role, have signed up for the third picture.

However Ross fears Disney might not be able to persuade the entire original cast to reprise their roles for a fourth time.

'Are we going to have all the cast back? Probably not,' he says.

'Will we have some of them? I hope so.'

But Zac Efron and Vanessa Hudgens will pass on the 4th instalment of the Disney Channel franchise.

Yesterday, Zac was spotted making his way through the terminal at JFK airport in New York City.

He was returning back to the States after filming Me and Orson Welles in London and is headed to Salt Lake City to join his fellow cast members on the Utah set of High School Musical 3.

Meanwhile, Zac Efron - who also starred in Hairspray - is being lined-up for his first gay role, as one of the DuPont twins who were leading lights at the legendary nightclub Studio 54 during the late 70s and Andy Warhol's heyday. Will he go shirtless for that role?

Today's equivalent in the UK is Nikki Grahame and Faces nightclub on the A12 at Romford!
