Bloating is caused by trapped wind in the digestive system normally caused by fod intolerances, too much alcohol (come on, admit it!), constipation, too much salt and munching too quickly.

Yep, we’re all guilty.

So here are ten great ways to beat the bloat.

RUSSELL BRAN:

Replace top bloaters like wheat with rice or oats and swap bran cereals for corn cereals or breakfast on fresh fruit and yoghurt instead.

GO VEGGIE:

Avoid constipation by eating plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables and drinking plenty…and go to the loo when you get the urge, to avoid digestive problems.

BACT TO BASICS:

Try a course of probiotics to rebalance the good and bad bacteria in your system. Find supplements at the chemist or eat a bio yoghurt every day.

GET FRUITY:

Rebalance fluid levels with apples, pears and rhubarb, a great source of potassium.

Go for cherries and citrus fruits, and pineapple contains the wonder-enzyme bromelain that helps digestion. Papaya helps if you’ve been eating rich meaty foods.

BATTLE THE BOOZE:

Cut back on alcohol and salty foods, which can cause fluid retention and bloat the tummy. Cut down on ready meals and processed foods which often have tons of salt in them.

BE NATURAL:

Celery, onion, parsley, coffee, tea, aubergine, garlic and peppermint will all help you to the loo – and beat water retention.

FISH FOR COMPLIMENTS:

Eating enough protein? If not, hit the fish, lean meat or tofu to reduce fluid retention – but keep an eye on the amount of beans and pulses.

SOS FOR PMS:

Address those PMS symptoms by trying a supplement, 1,000mg of calcium a day can work wonders for water retention. Evening primrose oil and vitamin B6 supps can keep PMS at bay – yay!

EAU MY GOD!

Drink at least eight glasses of water a day. Regular small amounts are best.

TAKE IT EASY:

Slow down at mealtimes, stop eating on the run, savour and chew your food. Gulping meals takes in air – which can bloat.

JUST LIKE A PIL:

Try Pilates to work your stomach muscles – it helps pull your stomach up and in and is a great way to get your waist back after a baby.
